I meant to post this a couple weeks ago but I guess I just never got a round to it.As a mom with a child who has diabetes I feel an obligation to at least get the word out about how to know or suspect that something may be going on, whether it be a child, adult, or elderly person that could possibly have diabetes and not know. Some of the signs that trademark this are: Unquenchable thirst. Leland was drinking LOTS of water. In the morning he would drink 2 sippycups before eating anything. Frequent urination, this can be a little tricky since drinking a lot and then having to use the bathroom go hand and hand. However, the frequent urination actually has little to do with the drinking. It has more to do with the body trying to expel the keytones that are building up in the body. Extreme hunger, in a person with diabetes the body is not producing or using the insulin produced in the pancreas very well so the carbs that are being eaten are just turning to sugar then not being used which leads to the next symptom. Tiredness, since your body is not able to use the carbs/sugar in your body you have little or no energy. As things progress and if undiagnosed the body will then start going into something called DKA diabetic ketoacidosis. This is when things really get scary( this is what Leland was going through when we found out, poor guy) Breathing will not be labored per say but more rapid, your body is trying to “blow off” the acidity that is building up. Vomiting is next, most people like Dave and I thought Leland just had a stomach flu and in most kids this would probably be the case. I don’t want you to freak out every time your kids are throwing up, but please think about if they have been exhibiting any of the other signs that you may want to have them checked out.
If you would like to see more about Type 1 ( Juvenile Diabetes) look here. You can get Type 1 whether you are a child or adult so don’t think it is not possible if you are in your 20′s, 30′s or beyond. For information about Type 2 diabetes go here.
